Types of AI

AI can be broadly categorized in a few ways. One common distinction is between:

  • Narrow AI (Weak AI): AI systems designed and trained for a particular task. Examples include virtual assistants like Siri or Alexa, recommendation engines on Netflix, or self-driving car software.
  • General AI (Strong AI / Artificial General Intelligence - AGI): This is a theoretical form of AI that has the capacity to understand or learn any intellectual task that a human being can. We are not yet at the stage of AGI.
  • Superintelligence: A hypothetical AI that possesses intelligence far surpassing that of the brightest human minds.

Key Subfields of AI

AI is a vast field with many interconnected sub-disciplines. Some of the most prominent include:

  • Machine Learning (ML): Algorithms that allow systems to learn from data without being explicitly programmed.
  • Deep Learning (DL): A subset of ML that uses artificial neural networks with many layers to learn complex patterns.
  • Natural Language Processing (NLP): Enabling computers to understand, interpret, and generate human language.
  • Computer Vision: Allowing computers to "see" and interpret visual information from the world.
  • Robotics: The design, construction, operation, and application of robots.
  • Expert Systems: AI programs that mimic the human expert's ability to solve problems in a specific domain.
