I've just set up my new canvas tent for the first time and noticed a few leaks after a heavy rain. Does anyone have proven methods to improve waterproofing? I'm especially interested in DIY sealants or treatments that won't damage the fabric.

I use a combination of a high-quality silicone sealant on seams and a waterproofing spray (Nikwax Tent & Gear). Apply the spray on a clean, dry tent, then let it cure for 24 hrs. It’s worked great on my 1999 canvas tent.

If you’re on a budget, a clear D‑4 waterproofing glue works well on stitches. Just brush it onto the seam, let it dry, then apply a thin layer of wax (like Owatrol) over the whole fabric for extra protection.

Got a 3‑year old canvas tent that still holds up after a week in 90 mm/h rain. The secret? A regular re‑application of a breathable waterproofing spray (Muck Away) every spring. Keeps the fabric from getting stiff.
