Wood Stove DIY Guide

Posted by EcoBuilder on March 12, 2025

Building your own wood stove can be a rewarding project that saves money and provides a cozy heating solution. Below is a step‑by‑step guide to help you get started.

Materials

  • 2" steel plate (minimum ½” thickness)
  • Steel pipe (for flue)
  • High‑temperature silicone sealant
  • Firebricks
  • Welding equipment

Steps

  1. Design the stove: Sketch a simple rectangular box with a door, firebox, and flue outlet. Use online calculators to size the firebox based on your heating needs.
  2. Cut the steel: Cut the plate to create the front, back, sides, and base. Ensure the flue opening is centered on the top.
  3. Assemble and weld: Weld the pieces together, leaving a gap for the door. Reinforce corners with additional steel brackets.
  4. Install firebricks: Line the interior walls of the firebox with firebricks to protect the steel and improve heat retention.
  5. Attach the flue pipe: Secure a 6‑inch diameter steel pipe to the top opening. Seal all joints with high‑temperature silicone.
  6. Finish the exterior: Paint with heat‑resistant paint or leave raw for a rugged look.

Safety tip: Always install a carbon monoxide detector near the stove and ensure proper ventilation.

Great guide! I built a similar stove and found that adding a small chimney cap helped reduce downdrafts.

Can you share the dimensions of the firebox you used? I'm planning a 30‑sq‑ft room.
