Best Audiophile Headphones 2024

JS

Hey everyone,

With 2024 upon us, I'm looking to upgrade my audiophile headphone setup. I'm particularly interested in open-back planar magnetic headphones, but I'm open to other suggestions if they offer exceptional sound quality for the price.

My budget is around $800-$1200, and I primarily listen to classical music, jazz, and some electronic. I have a decent DAC/amp combo, so amplification shouldn't be a major bottleneck.

What are your top picks for the best audiophile headphones this year? Any hidden gems I should be aware of?

Looking forward to hearing your recommendations!

Hi John,

Great topic! For that budget and your music preferences, I'd highly recommend checking out the HIFIMAN Arya Stealth Magnets. They offer incredible detail, a wide soundstage, and a very natural tonality that works wonderfully for acoustic genres.

Another strong contender is the Sennheiser HD 800 S if you can find it on sale slightly above your budget, or perhaps a used pair. The imaging and clarity are simply outstanding.

If you're leaning more towards dynamic drivers, the Focal Clear Mg are also fantastic, though they might push the upper limit of your budget.

Have you considered any specific models already?

Echoing Maria, the HIFIMAN Arya is a phenomenal choice. I've had mine for about six months and can't say enough good things about them. The detail retrieval is superb, and they scale beautifully with good amplification.

Also, don't overlook Audeze. While their LCD-X might be slightly over budget new, they offer a very different planar sound that's more impactful and warmer, which can be great for electronic music. Keep an eye out for deals!

For something a bit more unique, the Dan Clark Audio Stealth is an incredible closed-back option that punches way above its weight, offering a surprisingly open sound. But since you're looking for open-back, the Arya is probably the way to go.

Thanks for the excellent suggestions, Maria and Alex!

The HIFIMAN Arya Stealth Magnets are definitely on my radar. I've read a lot of positive reviews about their soundstage and clarity. The Sennheiser HD 800 S is also tempting, but I'm hesitant about the price unless a good sale pops up.

I haven't explored Audeze as much, but the LCD-X sounds interesting for the electronic music aspect. Dan Clark Audio Stealth is noted as a closed-back, and while I appreciate the recommendation, I'm really leaning towards open-back for that immersive experience.

Any thoughts on newer releases from brands like Meze Audio or Beyerdynamic in the high-end open-back category for 2024?
