Troubleshooting AMD Driver Crashes on Windows 11

Initial Problem Description

Hey everyone,

I've been experiencing frequent AMD driver crashes on my Windows 11 PC. It happens randomly, sometimes during gaming, sometimes just browsing. The screen often goes black for a second, or I get a "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered" error. This is becoming really frustrating.

My system specs:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X
  • GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT
  • Motherboard: ASUS ROG STRIX B550-F GAMING
  • RAM: 32GB DDR4 3600MHz
  • OS: Windows 11 Pro (Latest build)
  • Driver Version: Latest Adrenalin 23.10.2

I've tried clean installing the drivers using DDU, rolling back to older versions, updating Windows, and checking for hardware issues (temps are fine). Nothing seems to fix it permanently.

Any ideas or suggestions on what else I can try?

Re: Troubleshooting AMD Driver Crashes on Windows 11

Hi TechGuru77,

Sorry to hear you're having trouble. Driver crashes can be a real headache. Let's try a few more common fixes:

  1. Check System File Checker (SFC) and DISM: Open Command Prompt as administrator and run sfc /scannow, then run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth. This can fix corrupted system files that might be interfering with drivers.
  2. Disable Fast Startup in Windows: Sometimes Fast Startup can cause issues with hardware initialization. Search for "Power Options" -> "Choose what the power buttons do" -> "Change settings that are currently unavailable" and uncheck "Turn on fast startup".
  3. Verify Game/Application Settings: Are you using any specific graphics settings in games or applications that might be pushing the driver too hard or causing conflicts? Try disabling any overclocking profiles or specific features like Radeon Boost or Anti-Lag temporarily.
  4. Check for BIOS Updates: While less common for driver crashes, an outdated motherboard BIOS can sometimes cause compatibility issues. Check your motherboard manufacturer's website for the latest BIOS version.

Let us know if any of these help!

Re: Troubleshooting AMD Driver Crashes on Windows 11

I had a similar issue a few months back. For me, it turned out to be a specific game update that was incompatible with the driver version I was using. I had to roll back the driver to an older, stable version and wait for a new driver release. Also, ensure that your power supply is sufficient for your GPU under load. A PSU that's borderline can cause instability.

What PSU are you running, TechGuru77?
