Best PSU for a Mid-Range Gaming PC in 2024?

Hey everyone, I'm planning on building a new mid-range gaming PC and I'm trying to figure out the best PSU for the job. I'm aiming for a build around $1200-$1500, likely with an RTX 4070 Super or RX 7800 XT and a Ryzen 7 7700X. I'm looking for something reliable, efficient (gold or platinum rating), and with enough headroom for potential future upgrades. My budget for the PSU is around $100-$150. What are your recommendations? Any specific models or brands I should be looking for (or avoiding)? Thanks in advance!

Hi GamerGeek123, For a build like that, a 750W or 850W Gold-rated PSU would be a solid choice. This gives you plenty of power for your chosen components and good headroom for upgrades. Brands I highly recommend:
  • Corsair (RMx series)
  • Seasonic (Focus GX series)
  • be quiet! (Straight Power 11 series)
A 750W unit from any of these brands should fit your budget and needs perfectly. If you anticipate significant GPU upgrades down the line (e.g., to an RTX 4090 level), then an 850W unit might be worth considering, though it might push your budget slightly. Make sure to check reviews for specific models for fan noise and ripple control.

I'd second the recommendations for Corsair and Seasonic. I've had a Corsair RM750x for about 3 years now, powering a similar build, and it's been flawless. Very quiet and stable. Another option to consider is the be quiet! Pure Power 11 FM 750W. It's often a bit more budget-friendly than the Straight Power series and still offers great quality and efficiency.

What about brands like Cooler Master or Thermaltake? I saw a Cooler Master MWE Gold 750W that's within my budget. Is it as reliable as the others?

Good question, BudgetGamer! Cooler Master and Thermaltake have some excellent PSUs, but also some that are less so. The MWE Gold series from Cooler Master is generally well-regarded for its value and performance in the mid-range. It's often a solid choice if you're on a tighter budget. Thermaltake's Toughpower GF1 series is also a strong contender. However, for absolute peace of mind and arguably the best long-term reliability and customer support, sticking with Corsair or Seasonic is usually a safe bet. Always check individual model reviews!
