My First SFF Build: Fractal Design Meshlicious & RTX 4070 Build Log

Hey everyone!

I've been lurking on these forums for a while, admiring all your incredible SFF builds. Finally, I decided to take the plunge and build my own compact gaming rig. After much research, I settled on the excellent Fractal Design Meshlicious case for its incredible airflow and stylish looks. This build log will document my journey from unboxing to the final boot-up!

Phase 1: Component Selection

Choosing parts for an SFF build is crucial to ensure everything fits and performs well. Here's what I ended up with:

  • Case: Fractal Design Meshlicious (Black, Mini-ITX)
  • CPU: Intel Core i5-13600K
  • CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-L9i-17xx chromax.black.swap
  • Motherboard: ASUS ROG STRIX Z790-I GAMING WIFI
  • RAM: Corsair Vengeance DDR5 32GB (2x16GB) 6000MHz CL30
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 (MSI VENTUS 3X OC)
  • Storage: Samsung 980 Pro 1TB NVMe SSD
  • PSU: Cooler Master V750 SFX Gold (750W)

The biggest challenge was fitting the RTX 4070, but the Meshlicious supports GPUs up to 336mm long, which was perfect for this specific model.

Phase 2: The Build Process

Assembly was a bit tight, as expected with an SFF build. I opted for the dual-chamber layout to keep cables tidy and improve airflow to the GPU.

  1. Installed the CPU and RAM onto the motherboard.
  2. Mounted the Noctua cooler. Its low profile is perfect for the Meshlicious.
  3. Installed the motherboard into the case.
  4. Carefully slid in the RTX 4070. This was the most nerve-wracking part!
  5. Installed the SFX PSU and connected all the necessary cables. Cable management required patience!
  6. Connected the front panel I/O and power button.

Phase 3: Cable Management & First Boot

Cable management is key for both aesthetics and thermals in small cases. I used zip ties and Velcro straps to keep everything neat behind the motherboard tray.

After double-checking all connections, it was time for the moment of truth. Powered it on, and...

SUCCESS! The system booted up without a hitch!

Initial Impressions & Benchmarks

Everything seems to be running smoothly. Idle temps are great, and I'm excited to push this machine with some gaming. I'll be running some benchmarks soon and will update this post with the results.

Current Stats:

  • CPU Load Temps (Idle): ~30°C
  • GPU Load Temps (Idle): ~28°C

Stay tuned for more updates, including benchmarks and potential fan upgrades!
