Plex OTA DVR Setup

Hey everyone,

I'm trying to set up the OTA DVR feature in Plex and running into a few issues. I've got a tuner and an antenna connected to my network, and Plex is detecting them, but I can't seem to get it to scan for channels successfully. It just hangs on the "scanning" screen for ages. Anyone have any tips or common pitfalls to watch out for?

Specifically, I'm using a:

  • HDHomeRun CONNECT QUATRO tuner
  • Philips indoor HDTV antenna

I've tried restarting Plex, the tuner, and my router, but no luck so far. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

That's a common frustration! The scanning process can be quite sensitive. Let's try a few things:

1. Antenna Placement: How far is your antenna from the tuner? Ensure it's within a reasonable range and not obstructed by metal objects or thick walls. Try repositioning the antenna, even slightly, and rescan.

2. Network Connection: Is the HDHomeRun directly connected to your router via Ethernet? Wi-Fi can sometimes introduce latency or packet loss that affects scanning.

3. HDHomeRun IP Address: Make sure Plex is configured with the correct IP address of your HDHomeRun. You can usually find this in your router's connected devices list or by using the HDHomeRun network setup tool.

4. Channel Scan Settings: In Plex, when you set up the tuner, did you specify a region or zip code? This helps Plex narrow down the frequencies to scan. Sometimes, a manual scan for specific frequencies can be more effective if the automatic one fails.

Also, double-check the HDHomeRun's own status page (usually accessible via its IP address in a web browser) to ensure it's detecting the tuner and any connected cables correctly.

To answer your questions:

  • The antenna is about 10 feet from the HDHomeRun, and they're both in the same room, fairly clear.
  • Yes, the HDHomeRun is connected via Ethernet directly to the router.
  • I checked the HDHomeRun app, and it shows a valid IP address. Plex is definitely using that one.
  • I did enter my zip code. I haven't tried a manual scan yet, that's a good idea.

I'll try repositioning the antenna and attempt a manual scan via the HDHomeRun app first, then try a Plex scan again. Will report back!
