Azure Managed Disks Pricing

Understand the cost associated with Azure Managed Disks. Pricing is based on the disk type, provisioned capacity, and data transfer. All prices are in USD.

Note: Prices shown are illustrative and may vary based on region and specific Azure offers. Always refer to the Azure Pricing Calculator for the most accurate and up-to-date pricing.

Disk Types and Pricing

Disk Type Price per GB/Month (Provisioned) IOPS/Throughput (Example for 1TB) Notes
Standard HDD $0.015 ~500 IOPS / 200 MB/s Best for backup, non-critical, and archival workloads.
Standard SSD $0.04 ~600 IOPS / 200 MB/s Cost-effective for web servers, lightly used applications, and dev/test.
Premium SSD $0.10 ~1250 IOPS / 250 MB/s Balanced price-performance for most production applications.
Ultra Disk Starts at $0.40 (plus IOPS/Throughput charges) Up to 125K IOPS / 2 GB/s (Configurable) High-performance, tunable for demanding workloads like SAP HANA.
Shared Disk (Premium SSD) $0.12 ~1250 IOPS / 250 MB/s For clustered applications requiring shared block storage.

Details on Disk Pricing

Managed Disk pricing is composed of several factors:

  • Provisioned Capacity: Charged for the total gigabytes (GB) provisioned on the disk, regardless of how much data is actually stored.
  • IOPS and Throughput (Premium/Ultra): For Premium SSD and Ultra Disks, there are separate charges based on the provisioned IOPS and throughput. These are often tiered and depend on the disk size and configuration.
  • Data Transfer: Ingress (data into Azure) is free. Egress (data out of Azure) incurs standard Azure data transfer charges. Data transfer within the same Azure region is generally free.
  • Snapshots: Charged based on the provisioned capacity of the snapshot.
  • Disk Encryption: Encryption at rest (using Azure Disk Encryption or platform-managed keys) is included at no extra charge.

Key Cost Components

Provisioned Storage
The primary cost is for the storage capacity you provision. This applies to all disk types.
IOPS & Throughput
For high-performance disks (Premium SSD, Ultra), you pay for the performance metrics you enable.
Data Egress
Transferring data out of Azure regions incurs network egress charges.
Important: Ultra Disk pricing is highly configurable. You pay for provisioned capacity, provisioned IOPS, and provisioned throughput independently. Refer to the Ultra Disk documentation for detailed pricing models.
