What is Virtualization?

Virtualization is the creation of a virtual version of something, such as an operating system, a server, a storage device, or network resources. It allows a single physical machine to run multiple virtual machines (VMs), each with its own operating system and applications.

Think of it as creating separate, isolated digital computers on a single piece of physical hardware. This technology is foundational for modern cloud computing, data centers, and efficient IT infrastructure management.
