Installation of SQL Server Analysis Services
This document provides a comprehensive guide to installing SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) on your server. SSAS is a business intelligence solution that provides online analytical processing (OLAP) and data mining functionalities for business applications.
Prerequisites
Before you begin the installation, ensure that your system meets the following prerequisites:
- A compatible version of Microsoft SQL Server installed.
- Sufficient disk space for the SSAS binaries and databases.
- Administrator privileges on the server where SSAS will be installed.
- Network connectivity if installing on a remote server or requiring access to shared resources.
Installation Steps
Follow these steps to install SQL Server Analysis Services:
- Download the SQL Server Installation Media: Obtain the appropriate SQL Server installation media (ISO file or media pack) from Microsoft.
-
Run the Setup Program:
Locate the
setup.exefile on the installation media and run it as an administrator. - Choose Installation Type: In the SQL Server Installation Center, select "Installation" and then "New SQL Server standalone installation or add features to an existing installation."
- Enter Product Key: If prompted, enter your SQL Server product key.
- Accept License Terms: Review and accept the license terms.
- Select Features: On the "Feature Selection" page, ensure that "Analysis Services" is checked. You can also select other features if needed.
- Instance Configuration: Configure the instance name for Analysis Services. It's recommended to use a meaningful name.
- Server Configuration: Configure the service accounts for Analysis Services. For security best practices, it is recommended to use dedicated service accounts.
-
Database Engine Configuration:
For Analysis Services, you will select the mode. Choose between "Multidimensional and Data Mining" or "Tabular".
- Multidimensional and Data Mining Mode: This is the traditional mode for SSAS, supporting OLAP cubes and data mining models.
- Tabular Mode: This mode offers an in-memory columnar database that uses a familiar data modeling approach with tables, rows, and columns.
- Analysis Services Configuration: Specify the server mode (Multidimensional or Tabular). You will also need to specify the server administrators. Add the necessary user accounts or groups that will manage the SSAS instance.
- Ready to Install: Review the summary of your selections and click "Install" to begin the installation process.
- Installation Complete: Once the installation is finished, review the completion report.
Important: After installation, it is highly recommended to apply the latest service pack and cumulative updates for SQL Server to ensure you have the most up-to-date features and security patches.
Post-Installation Tasks
After a successful installation, consider the following tasks:
- Configure Firewall: Ensure that firewall rules are configured to allow access to the SSAS instance if it needs to be accessed remotely.
- Create Databases: Start creating your Analysis Services databases and populate them with data.
- Set Permissions: Configure appropriate security roles and permissions for users and applications accessing SSAS.
Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues during installation, consult the SQL Server Setup log files located in the %Program Files%\Microsoft SQL Server\ directory. Common issues can often be resolved by verifying prerequisites or checking for conflicting software.
