Modular Synth Basics

Modular synthesizers are like a Lego set for sound. Instead of a single black box, you assemble individual modules—oscillators, filters, envelopes, and more—each handling a specific function in the signal chain. This flexibility lets you craft uniquely complex timbres and explore sound design in a hands‑on, visual way.

The core building blocks are:

• Oscillators (VCOs): generate raw waveforms—sine, square, saw, triangle, and more.
• Filters (VCFs): shape the harmonic content by removing frequencies.
• Envelopes (EGs): control how a sound evolves over time (attack, decay, sustain, release).
• LFOs: low‑frequency oscillators for modulation, creating vibrato, tremolo, or rhythmic patterns.
• Mixers & Amplifiers (VCAs): blend signals and control their overall level.
