Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) adds an extra layer of security to your account by requiring you to verify your identity using multiple methods. This significantly reduces the risk of unauthorized access, even if your password is compromised.

What is MFA?

Traditionally, you log into an account with a username and password. MFA goes beyond this by requiring you to provide an additional piece of evidence, such as a code generated by an authenticator app, a security key, or a biometric scan.

Why Use MFA?

Types of MFA

  1. Authenticator Apps: Apps like Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, and Authy generate time-based one-time passwords (TOTPs).
  2. SMS Codes: Receiving a verification code via text message. (Less secure than authenticator apps)
  3. Security Keys: Physical devices (like YubiKeys) that provide hardware-based authentication.
  4. Biometric Authentication: Using fingerprint or facial recognition.
