Best Mechanical Keyboard for Gaming - Recommendations Needed!

JD

Hey everyone,

I'm looking to upgrade my gaming keyboard and I'm overwhelmed by the choices out there. I'm primarily a gamer, playing a lot of FPS and RTS titles. I'm leaning towards a mechanical keyboard for the tactile feedback and durability.

Here are some things I'm considering:

  • Switch Type: I'm not entirely sure about this. Linear (like Cherry MX Red) for speed, or tactile (like Brown) for a bit of feedback without the loud click? Open to suggestions!
  • Form Factor: Full-size, TKL (Tenkeyless), or maybe even 60%? I have limited desk space, so TKL or smaller might be better.
  • Features: RGB lighting is a plus, but not essential. Dedicated media keys would be nice.
  • Budget: Around $150-$200.

What are your go-to mechanical keyboards? Any specific models you'd highly recommend within my budget? Also, any advice on choosing the right switch type for gaming would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Hi John,

Great question! Mechanical keyboards are definitely a game-changer for gaming.

For FPS and RTS, many gamers prefer linear switches (like Cherry MX Red or Gateron Reds). They offer a smooth, consistent keystroke with no tactile bump or audible click, which can feel faster and more responsive for rapid inputs. However, tactile switches (like Cherry MX Brown or Gateron Browns) are also very popular. They provide a subtle bump to let you know the key has actuated without being too loud, which can be helpful for typing and general use.

My personal favorite is the Keychron K8 (TKL). It's a fantastic value, comes with hot-swappable switches (meaning you can change them out easily if you decide you don't like the stock ones), and has excellent build quality. It also has RGB options and can be used wirelessly via Bluetooth or wired. You can usually find it within your budget.

Another strong contender is the Ducky One 3 Mini (60%) or SF (65%). Ducky boards are known for their durability and excellent typing feel. They often come with custom keycaps too!

If you're considering a TKL, the HyperX Alloy Origins is also a solid choice with their own linear or tactile switches.

Definitely try to find a local store where you can test out different switches if possible! Good luck with your search!

Echoing Sarah's recommendation for linear switches for gaming. I've been using a Corsair K70 RGB MK.2 with Cherry MX Speed Silver switches for years, and they are incredibly fast and responsive for FPS. They're a type of linear switch with a shorter actuation point.

For desk space, I switched to a TKL and haven't looked back. It frees up so much room for mouse movement. The Keychron K8 is a great suggestion, but if you want something a bit more premium and don't mind paying a bit extra, look into brands like Wooting (e.g., Wooting 60%). They have analog input and adjustable actuation points, which is a bit of a niche feature but amazing for some games.

Budget-wise, you can often find good deals on Corsair or Logitech G series keyboards during sales events. Keep an eye out!
