Quickstart: DragonBoard 410c with Windows IoT

Welcome to the quickstart guide for deploying Windows IoT on your DragonBoard 410c. This guide will walk you through the essential steps to get your board up and running with Windows IoT, enabling you to explore its capabilities for embedded development and IoT solutions.

The DragonBoard 410c, powered by the Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 410E processor, offers a versatile platform for developing a wide range of IoT applications, from smart devices to industrial automation.

Prerequisites

Before you begin, ensure you have the following:

  • A DragonBoard 410c development board.
  • A microSD card (16GB or larger, Class 10 recommended).
  • A USB Type-A to Micro-B cable.
  • A power supply for the DragonBoard 410c.
  • A Windows PC for preparing the installation media.
  • Internet access to download necessary files.

Step 1: Prepare the DragonBoard 410c

Ensure your DragonBoard 410c is in a state ready for flashing. Typically, this involves ensuring it's powered off and connected via USB for flashing.

  1. Disconnect the power supply from the DragonBoard 410c.
  2. Connect the DragonBoard 410c to your Windows PC using the USB Type-A to Micro-B cable. This cable will be used for flashing the operating system.
  3. Insert the microSD card into the DragonBoard 410c.

Step 2: Flash Windows IoT

Use Windows ICD to Create Bootable Media

  1. Install the Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (ADK) and the Windows IoT Enterprise Add-ons on your Windows PC.
  2. Launch Windows ICD.
  3. Select File > New project.
  4. Choose the IoT Enterprise project type.
  5. Provide a project name (e.g., "DragonBoard410c_IoT") and location.
  6. Click Next and then Create.
  7. In the "Select a configuration type" screen, choose Provisioning package.
  8. Follow the on-screen prompts to select your Windows IoT image, configure settings, and generate the provisioning package.
  9. Once the package is created, navigate to the project's output folder.
  10. Use a tool like Rufus or balenaEtcher to write the generated Windows IoT image onto your microSD card. Ensure you select the correct device to avoid data loss.

Step 3: Initial Setup

With the microSD card prepared, you can now boot your DragonBoard 410c.

  3. Connect the power supply to the DragonBoard 410c.
  4. The board should boot into the Windows IoT setup process. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the initial configuration, including network setup, account creation, and privacy settings.
